There are approximately 450,000 children in the U.S. foster care system, 4,200 in San Bernardino County alone. Many have suffered terrible sexual and physical abuse, all have suffered the trauma of having been taken from their families. Two years after aging out of the system at age 18 half remain unemployed, 25% have spent time in jail, 40% of the girls become pregnant, 20% are living on the streets and less than 3% have attended college.
The Mission of the Royal Family Kids program is to make a difference in the future of these children by providing positive memories and imparting the hope of Jeremiah 29:11 into their lives:
“For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope”
CCF is honored to partner with Royal Family Kids Camp. For one week during the summer, hand picked Counselors spend 24 hours a day with one to two campers. Numerous activities are designed to create positive memories and help the kids experience God’s love in tangible ways. Activities include swimming, rock climbing wall, paint ball, field sports, wood working, animal encounter, arts and crafts, painting, dress-up and tea party, archery and more. Each evening the kids look forward to receiving their mail filled with affirming notes from the camp staff and other campers. Through the week the kids come to love our camp Grandma and Grandpa who listen to their stories while serving them cookies and milk in the cabin. Many of these kids don’t get an opportunity to celebrate their birthdays so on the “all camp birthday party day” we celebrate with a birthday carnival, cake and a special present chosen by their counselors. At the end of the week the children are provided with a personalized photo album that they can take home which become a prized possession for many.
Can a week make a difference ? The answer is absolutely ! This is evidenced by kids arriving with broken spirits and leave healed and filled with the hope and love through Jesus Christ and the compassion of our loving counselors and staff. This camp also touches the lives of the volunteers which for many is their very first mission.
It was great to visit a first year camp and see how camps start off in year 1! I really loved being able to watch all the kids and volunteers interact with each other. You could really tell the volunteers had a huge heart for the kids and were so excited to be there to serve and love on them! We were able to see the kids at the activity centers, building wood-working crafts and painting their handprints on quilts. The director, Jeff, and pastor, Melanie, were so welcoming and gracious to us! They showed us all around camp, explaining what activities took place at each location. It was great to interact with the kids and ask them what their favorite memories of camp were. All the kids were so excited and happy to be there; you could tell they were able to leave behind the stresses from their everyday lives and embrace being a child enjoying summer camp. The staff were so patient and enthusiastic with the kids as well. It was evident they truly enjoyed giving up a week of their life to spend with these kids. This might have been this camp’s first year, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell. Everything seemed to run so smoothly, all the staff seemed very well trained, and the camp as a whole seemed to run like a well-oiled machine! It was great to visit this camp and I can’t wait to see them again next summer!
